OBSERVATIONS

Through observations and market assessment I worked to understand key attributes and features of competitive bags. This phase consisted of testing competitive bags, creating design research scopes, and identifying trends in the market.

Osprey.

Osprey has been a stable for hikers, campers and outdoors enthusiasts for years. They create simple yet effective bags that stand the test of time for any adventure. Their bags boast versatility for every adventure and quality material composition.

Black Diamond.

Black Diamond creates specialty backpacks and carry solutions that support recreational athletes all the way to extreme athletes. Their unique profiles and quality features set them apart from their competitors.

Cotopaxi.

Cotopaxi has been wowing people with their color pops for years. This paired with their durable construction methods and quality materials make them a real contender in the bag market.

CONSUMER VOICE.

Through athlete communication and product reviews, I gained insights into effective features and potential areas for improvement within the existing market offerings for bags (Below call out some of the key reviews and points mentioned by our target athletes).

“I can't get over how much I loved this bag. It's small. But the capacity is surprising. Sometimes you just want a little pack that doesn't look like you also use it biking or skiing or climbing. But looks much cooler than a kids school pack and rides better too. It's great for short hikes. Holds a couple rain jackets, or a couple pairs of river shoes, or a couple extra tops. Get my drift? I'm the one carrying a pack so that both of us have stuff we might need along the way. It was great for our recent Euro trip for bringing an extra layer to dinner just in case we got cold.”

Excellent. Perfect size for our 3 day weekend trips. The unique top closure is easy and opens wide. The materials are attractive and as pictured. Comfortable to sling. I cannot say enough about how much I like this pack. I get a lot of compliments as well. Thank you Cotopaxi for delivering as promised.

“1) the shell material and zippers - I’ve gotten sand, mud, and rain on this and they all just rinse right off. 2) truly useful compartments - perfect for trips storing passports and documents in the front horizontal zipper, then sunglasses, keys, wallet, and headphones in the top part, iPads and electronics in the padded pocket, etc. they are all the right size for their job.

DESIGN FOCUS.

INSPIRATION.

Contemporary Class.

Contemporary Class focuses on modern aesthetics paired with traditional structures.

Technical Touches.

How can key technical touches elevate the design past the competition?

Thoughtful Composition.

Breaking out the components and understand how they combine to create a streamlined assembly.

CONCEPT SYNTHESIS.

Below is a glimpse into some of the concept synthesis that took place during the development process. As the athlete profile continued to develop and feature set solidified, the design was molded.

FINAL CONCEPT.

FINAL TECHPACK DEVELOPMENT.

Techpack Data Development.

Through the development of paper models, 2D artwork, 3D CLO Models, etc. I was able to come to a factory ready resolution. During the sampling phase I managed lab dips, sample reports, material testing, and tech pack refinements

3D Development + Refinement.

During the refinement stages of this project, I worked in CLO3D to fully understand the pattern makeup, construction details, and CMF of the 24L Daypack.
